Despite this distinction, Raimondo says that gender had little bearing on her candidacy. Given the state’s financial health, she indicated that “people are more interested in qualifications than anything else.”

Welcome! I’m thrilled that you’ve stopped by and I hope you’ll spend some time looking around the Gina Raimondo for R.I. Treasurer site. It’s a centralized location to learn more about me and my vision for the Treasurer’s role, as well as the latest news from the campaign and the issues affecting Rhode Islanders today.

If you’ve ever wondered exactly what the Treasurer does for Rhode Island, you’re not alone. Essentially, the Treasurer is the state’s chief banker, overseeing a range of financial functions, including administering the retirement system, receiving and disbursing state funds, structuring the state’s bonds and managing the state’s investments in the pension system.

But I think the Treasurer’s office can do even more.

My vision for the office includes boosting the financial literacy of all Rhode Islanders, so that each and every one of our state’s citizens — from young school children to college students to working adults to retired seniors — has the knowledge and skills they need to effectively manage and grow their money at each stage of life. I want to empower people so that they can make smart choices and avoid risky financial products.

My vision for the Treasurer’s office also includes taking a “watchdog” role over how the state spends its money. The best way to restore faith in our government is for government to provide high-quality services that perform well for its citizens. What I will bring to the role of Treasurer is a blend of professional — and life — experiences that make me uniquely qualified for the job.

As a daughter, I understand what it’s like to worry about caring for aging parents. As a mother, I know what it’s like to have hopes and dreams for your children — and to worry about whether you’ll have the resources to pursue them. And as a business owner, I know what it’s like to face uncertainty about your business’ ability to sustain growth.

I grew up in a hard-working family with a mother who was skilled at stretching every dollar we had — and who taught me to do the same. In my own career as a venture capitalist, I’ve worked hard to build sustainable companies with bright futures.

I look forward to putting these skills to work for all Rhode Islanders — and to making the Treasurer’s office an accountable resource for taxpayers, so that no Rhode Islander will ever have to ask: Where did our money go, and is it being spent wisely?
