Smithfield native Gina Raimondo is the unopposed Democratic candidate for General Treasurer on the 2010 ballot. If elected, she would be only the second woman to serve in that position, preceded by Republican Nancy J. Mayer, who served from 1993 to 1999. Despite this distinction, Raimondo says that gender had little bearing on her candidacy. Given the state’s financial health, she indicated that “people are more interested in qualifications than anything else.”
